The cell Milopotam
is located on the border between Iveron and Philotheou monasteries and belongs to the monastery of Great Lavra. On the way from the cell numerous
water mills are to be
met hence the name "Milopotam". The cell was
founded by Athonite Athanasius in
972 year as a clinic for monks of
Great Lavra.
In 1527 Milopotam
was plundered and burnt down by
Muslims and later re-established by Metropolitan Ternovsky Theofil. From 1899
till 1901 the Patriarch Ioakim III lived there before he became Ecumenical
Patriarch.
Nowadays Milopotam
is flourishing thanks to the monks living there. The katholikon of the cell is
dedicated to Saint Martyr Euthimios. Milopotam is well known for its vineyard
and vine of the same name.
